This past weekend the kids and I went on a road trip 2 1/2 hrs away while daddy had to work.  I brought our tote along with us for the ride.  I threw in some notebooks, color books, markers, snacks, diaper wipes, brush, Nintendo DSI's, among other things and had tons of room to spare.
