An Interview with Art of Princess M, Freelance Artist

Today's feature is Art of Princess M. I would like to introduce you to Princess Mia, the artist behind Art of Princess M. For amazing art illustrations, prints, and ACEOS, be sure to check out her work on Etsy. Let's meet Princess..

Tell us about yourself, your shop, and what you make.
Hello my name is Princess Mia and I am an 18 year old freelance artist. I create abstract illustrations and paintings made from watercolor paint and black ink. Each piece is based on the concepts of giving emotions, feelings, and stories human forms. My shop currently on etsy sells original artworks, commissions, and art prints.

How did you get started?
I was at a slump in my life thinking about the direction of my life. I no longer desired to be a fashion designer and could not think of an occupation that I would love doing. I had a long talk with my boyfriend and he convinced me to sell my art. I took his word for it and started selling my artwork I would create on my free time. The first week of having my art out there I had questions about buying and and commissions were coming in already. I even got a chance to work with a record company my first week!

Tell about your favorite piece.

My favorite piece is called " Name it something after me" I loved the colors and the overall piece itself. Every aspect of the piece worked the way I wanted to look.

What inspires you?
I am deeply inspired by people and their behaviors. How they react to things. Emotions they can't explain. The flaws of mankind everything about that shows beauty to me so I wanted to paint and draw picture based off that concept. Not on just a human alone but the feelings they contain that they can't see.

Here are some pieces from Princess Mia's shop. You can see that she is a terrific artist and her paintings reflect a beautiful uniqueness!

Thank you so much Princess for sharing your lovely shop with us! You do have a wonderful way of capturing emotion in your work and I love it!

An Interview with CereusArt, Beach Decor

Today's feature comes to us from Virginia Beach!! Oh how lovely the ocean view must be! Bring this nautical scene into your home right now by visiting CereusArt on Etsy! CereusArt specializes in beach, nautical, & coastal decor and gifts. Step into her shop, and you can almost smell the sea air! Seriously :)

Dana, tell us about yourself, your shop, and what you make / How did you get started?

Having lived in Virginia Beach, VA almost all of my life I’ve always had the ocean at my back door. While planning my beach wedding and week-long sea side celebration I was unable to find the finishing touches I desired to reflect my personal beach style so I made them. From beach themed embossed invitations to OOT guest baskets, bathroom baskets, de-sanding stations, personalized coasters, decorations, favors, water bottles, and wedding programs I made them all!

In 2011 I opened CereusArt for folks looking for handcrafted coastal decor and finishing touches.  My collection includes unique, one of a kind wall art, painted shells, sea shell garlands, authentic nautical inspired paper goods, and Christmas ornaments. Each piece is handcrafted with attention to detail from high quality materials. All items are handcrafted in the Virginia Beach studio and are inspired by the sea.

CereusArt products have been featured on numerous blogs, magazines, and retail gift shops, and have attracted a loyal following.

Tell about your favorite piece.

My favorite piece is the Golfing Santa Starfish Christmas Ornament.
This item began as a custom order requested by a good friend. It’s a fun item and it is a favorite gift for your golf aficionado!

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the sea – the colors, the textures, the smell. I love it all! I try to create products that allow you to bring the sea indoors. I want people to look at my wine charms or my garlands and remember their favorite beach vacation or their last Girl’s Night Out.

Interview with Beaded Dreams, Beaded Dream Catchers and Jewelry!

I have a lovely Etsy shop feature for you today! Beaded Dreams creates beaded dream catchers and jewelry. Beaded Dreams also creates Eyeglass holders. Yes, the kind that hangs from your neck so your glasses are always in a convenient place. But these Eyeglass holders are made out of beads! How cute is that?!

Meet Meral, the owner of Beaded Dreams

Tell us about yourself, your shop, and what you make.
My name is Meral Guven.  I have a degree in Music, and work in a Medical Office as a secretary.  I had to switch careers when the economy started to fall, and I realized that I needed another job that would help pay my rent.  I opened my Etsy Shop Beaded Dreams in 2009, but had to put it on hiatus when I  went back to school to complete my Medical Office Assisting course.  Last May I decided to "reopen" my shop and made a dedicated effort to make my shop more successful.

Beaded Dreams is a shop that mostly sells beaded items.  My specialties are dream catchers with beaded netting and recently started making eyeglass holders that can also be used as a stand alone necklace.  I also make other beaded items and jewelry.

How did you get started?
I started when I was around 11, my mom saw some necklaces that she liked in the store, but did not want to pay $$$.  So we went to a craft store, and my mom bought all the supplies and told me to try to make one for her.  She then started giving me harder and harder objects to make.  She really likes dream catchers so I took it upon myself to see if I can make a dream catcher on my own. Lo and behold, I managed to make the rainbow dream catcher (Seen in my favourite piece). Whenever people would come to the house, they would ask where she bought it, and when she told them I made it, then I started getting all these "orders" from family members!  And the rest is history :)

Tell about your favorite piece.

This was my first completed dream catcher pattern that I made.  Every time I look at it, it makes me smile, because it's such a wonderful colour combination.  This was the one that I made for my mom as a surprise, and it's been a favourite of mine ever since.

Wow! I love the colors!

And now, a peek in to Meral's shop!

What inspires you?
For me, beading is a wonderful stress reliever.  There's nothing like going into your own little world and forgetting about all the hardships of life for an hour or so.  So getting some meditation and sanity back is what inspires me the most.

You can also find Beaded Dreams at her blog:

Thank you to Meral for sharing your lovely shop!!

Be sure to check out Beaded Dreams on Etsy!

Colors of the Rainbow in the Handmade World

Colors of the rainbow!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have to stop and think about what the colors are and in what order they go in. They just so happen to be red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and then violet.

My topic of discussion today takes me back and reminds of when my 4-year-old was learning about the rainbow in preschool last year. It was one of her favorite weeks. At the end of the lesson she got to color her own rainbow. We had it hanging up on the wall for weeks!

I just created a treasury list over at Etsy consisting of handmade candles and soaps in the colors of the rainbow.. it's very pretty! Check it out here!

As my daughter learned in preschool, a rainbow may be seen in the sky after a rain shower by the reflection of the sun. The prism of colors we see is caused by the light of the rays reflecting on rain drops in the air.

Okay, back to the handmade part of my article. Candles! We all know that handmade candles are special. They have a special feel and a special look that make them different from just any ordinary candle. It is my opinion that handmade candles are higher quality candles due simply to the fact that they are hand-poured by an individual and more care is put into them.

I have selected some of the candles from my Etsy shop to display here in all of the colors of the rainbow except indigo and violet (coming soon perhaps?).

Okay, I know these are not red. They are magenta, bright & pretty!
This orange wickless candle is pumpkin spice scented!
Bright yellow!
These wide votive candles are lime green!
Pretty in royal blue!
In closing, I would like to mention just a few benefits of using handmade soap. Handmade soap, like candles, is specially made and hand-poured by a person. Great care is taken in each measurement, scent, color, and shape. And let's not forget that handmade soap has fewer and simpler ingredients than just any ordinary soap. Ingredients that are better for your skin such as natural oils. And less chemicals that will dry your skin.

And here are some of the soaps I have in my shop..

Sugar Scrub Cubes in bright yellow!
Bright green handmade soap bars!

Handmade Goodness - Guest Post by Cari Shannon

Handmade Goodness
Written by Cari Shannon
Coquette Bath & Home™

Now, if you're a regular reader of this blog, you're probably already nodding your head. Handmade is goodness, after all. We all know that. Right?

Well, not always. While I would never attempt to make my own shoes (cause feet are tricky...) I've pretty much made what I have worn, what I have eaten, what I've used to scent myself, clean myself and decorate myself for much of my life. Not to say that anyone else needs to do all of that. But, in so many ways, there are so many opportunities to use handmade...that I'd like to encourage you to think outside the box a bit.

First, let's talk about that big pink sparkly elephant in the corner. Yep, that one. The one with the white price tags on its sides. It's a nice elephant and it is just sitting there and waiting for you. Don't fret about it. Just smile and nod and it will be okay.

Elephants don't eat people, you know. But this sparkly pink elephant is there to remind you that handmade isn't going to be bargain basement pricing. Nope. It isn't made by little children working 15 hour shifts in poorly lit conditions without even a running toilet...as is sometimes the case in many third world places. Handmade is often created by a SAHM or someone who has chucked the rat race to fully express who they are. And they have light bills, and insurance on the car, and yeah eating is cool, too.

So, while you may be able to get a product for $5 at the local discount megaplex, you won't be able to get the same price in handmade. At least not usually. And you know what? That's perfectly fine. Quality over quantity. Find someone who really loves what they do and you can see that in the products they make. For those sweatshop products, the end result is to make a product as cheaply as possible. Not as well as can be. Not as good as can be. As cheaply as can be. That's why it breaks on the second use. Or loses all shape in the wash. Even some 'big company' products made in the USA (since I'm in Texas, I'm assuming you are in the US, if not, then cool...but since I am, I do rather make some assumptions...) can be pretty crappy, too.

Since I have my own product line (Coquette Bath & Home™, selling on my dot com (
www.coquettebath.com) and on Etsy as CoquetteBath), I do have a few personal issues.

So, let's start with soap. Yep, now you could buy 5 bars of something bar shaped at the local megaplex for $5 or so. But that's not soap, folks. That's a synthetic detergent bar. They get these chemicals to play around and produce these curds. And then they scoop those curds into a big press and  push really hard and out pops a bar that looks like soap. It will lather like soap. But unlike soap, it is made with chemicals designed to approximate quality. It may smell great (and some of them do, honestly) but the chemicals are harsh...stripping your skin of necessary natural emollients. Your skin is now dry as the desert, thank you very much. And so you reach for a bottle of the lotion that this company (thoughtfully) provides for you. But it's crappy, too. Filled with water soluble ingredients that wash away at the first hint of water. Not chock full of great butters and oils, like a handmade product is.

Now, you see some idea why the Goodness of Handmade is so important. I want to make a great product. Not good. Not acceptable. But great. I'm always tweaking my recipes, finding new molds, working on my labels, taking better photos...all in the interest of providing you with a great product. And, to encourage you to give my products a try. My soap is $5 a bar, most of the time. But it is real soap. Not made with some funky blend of chemicals that requires a PhD in Chemistry to pronounce. How about Coconut Oil, Safflower Oil, Shea Butter? Yep. I use those and more.

I can go on all day, but right now, I just know you're dying to trot over to Etsy (CoquetteBath, LOL) and other fine shops and do some perusing. Have fun. Buy real soap from real soapmakers. You'll be glad you did. And enjoy the lushness and the Goodness of Handmade.

Interview with Morgan Ralston Art, The Artwork of Morgan Ralston

I am pleased to bring you today's Etsy shop feature. Morgan Ralston is a very talented artist and owner of Etsy shop Morgan Ralston Art. Morgan Ralston Art creates original paintings and giclee (inkjet or digital prints) in an array of choices including floral, cityscape, and landscape.

Let's learn more about Morgan..

Tell us about yourself, your shop, and what you make.
I'm a Canadian painter/artist born in Toronto and living in Vancouver. My father was a struggling artist and my grandfather was a hobbyist painter who studied under The Group of Seven's, A.J. Casson. I've been painting for nearly 15 years since I took up acrylics during my studies in college. Until recently I didn't know about Etsy. I was introduced to the site by a fellow traveler as she was remarking on a painting I had with me. Since then there hasn't been a day that has passed without my need to peruse Etsy's ins and outs!

How did you get started?
I started drawing at an early age. I was 3 y/o when my mother gave me a pencil and some coloured construction paper. I was immediately hooked and have been drawing ever since!

Tell about your favorite piece.
I don't typically pick favourites, but when I do it's often the most recent piece I've worked on. This is because of the time and devotion I put into each of my pieces. However, for the sake of the interview I'd have to chose this pretty and petite floral painting.

I do love it and it is among the paintings I'm most fond of.

It is very pretty indeed! I am excited to share with you some other beautiful pieces from Morgan Ralston Art, check these out!

What inspires you?
Until recently, I had given up painting for some time. So I'll tell you what inspired me to returning to creating. A big dose of SUNSHINE! I spent 10 days under the Mexico sun and on the 2nd to last day something sparked in my head and I woke up wanting to paint! I couldn't stop thinking about images of things I could bring to live through acrylic, canvas and a fine tipped No.2 watercolour paintbrush!

Check out this website : www.morganralston.ca/

Thank you so much Morgan for sharing! You are an amazing artist!!

Friday's Fabulous Finds - Handmade Soap

TGIF! It is Friday again! This summer is flying by. I can not believe it's already the middle of July. The holiday season will be here before we know it. Has anyone starting considering gift ideas yet? I think I will be making a lot of my gifts this year.

This week, I introduced several new items in my Etsy shop consisting of sugar scrubs and soaps. All homemade and hand cut by me. I have found that I really enjoy making soap! It is a lot less time consuming than candle making.

Here are some of the items I premiered in my shop this week.. Let me know what you think!

Sugar Scrubs:

Monkey Farts Scented Sugar Scrub in a 4 oz plastic container. Monkey Farts is a juicy fruit medley of peach, strawberry, pineapple, coconut, and orange blended with creamy vanilla and an exotic musk.
Love Spell Scented Sugar Scrub in a 4 oz plastic container. Love Spell is a sweet bouquet of mandarin, bergamot & orange enhanced by hints of peach & berries on an undertone of musk.
Apple Jack & Peel Scented Sugar Scrub Cubes in a 16 oz glass jar. Apple and spices with a sweet background.

Glycerin Soaps:

Love Spell Scented Glycerin Soap 4 oz Bars.
Apple Jack & Peel Scented Glycerin Soap .5 oz Cubes.

For the sugar scrubs I used a clear glycerin soap base, olive oil, sunflower oil, white granulated sugar, skin safe fragrance oils, and soap dyes.

The glycerin soap bars and cubes consist of Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Coconut Oil, Triethanolamime, Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Myristate, Sodium Laurate, Sodium Stearate, Sorbitol, Sodium Laureth, Purified Water, skin safe fragrance oils, and soap dyes.

The soap base I used was very easy to just weigh, pop in the microwave, mix, and pour!

I plan to make some more Monkey Farts Scented soap next week and also some different fragrances without using any dye. I'm not sure what the new fragrances will be yet but the soap will be clear.
